The truth about Ren'py

Greetings. My name is Jack Clifford and my aim is to be a game designer. Recently, I have been doing some research about free game engines and I came across Ren’py. I was amazed at how it excelled as a visual novel engine. But, upon doing further research and investigation, I came to the conclusion that the Ren’py engine is nothing but a joke. Even its creator, PyTom seems to be a really irritating person.
You all must have heard about how great the Ren’py engine is, and how its creator PyTom has been supporting creators since 2004. But, actually, it’s a completely different story underground. Read further to know more:

5 things you didn’t know about Ren’py:
1.   Visual novel Engine? Ren’py is called a visual novel engine, but actually it is nothing more than a few hundred lines of code slapped on top of an already existing and versatile game engine called PyGame.
2.   High quality Games? You may see some “high quality” flagship titles on the Renpy homepage. But, those are actually the best pieces the OELVN community has produced in its existence. In other words, a polished shiny piece of shit is still a piece of shit. Also, you may check out these “amazing works of staggering genius”.

3.   Pseudo Games: Lots of supposedly “high quality” games by so-called “professional game designers” seems to have been released using the engine. But these “high quality” games are nothing more than “point and click”, “click to continue” type of pseudo-games. Even these pseudo games need to rely mostly on mediocre to shiny artwork, cheap sound effects and C-grade novel writing.
4.   Cheap Workstations: The real gaming industry has a lot of offices and factories for producing and designing their games. But what do the Ren’py game developers have? They are armed with nothing more than $ 300 netbooks which serve as their workstations. How pathetic.
5.   The “Lint” function: This “Lint” function in Ren’py is more than annoying. Even if you get your script checked, lots of bugs in your script will escape through. Sometimes, even if there is no bug in your game, the “Lint” will show one or two. So, what’s really is the point of this “Lint”?

5 things you didn’t know about Pytom:
1.   Supporting creators since 2004? Yes, he did. But only the ones “HE” likes. The rest gets harassed, ignored and pestered and so on. Also there was an article written by someone concerning Christianity and animal rights, and how did Pytom react to it?
This is how. http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=14956&start=15#p195464
“Let this thread drop into obscurity”- That’s how he supports creators.
2.   Threatening users: The problem is not just that he can’t understand a joke but the problem also is his ego. “If you do this, I’ll ban you! If you do that, I’ll ban you!” His tyranny knows no bounds.
http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=12895&p=182356#p182252
3.   Anti-feminism: Yes, PyTom and his associates oppose feminism.
Check this out. http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=13172&start=300#p178187
http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=13172&start=285#p178174
4.   Subjective Democracy:  PyTom supports your freedom to advocate your own beliefs in the Lemmasoft Forums as long as it's beneficial to him and his engine or if he just likes the idea. If you try to advocate feminism, animal rights and fair treatment for all types of users in the forums, you will be labeled as a potential troublemaker for life and all your subsequent posts will be closely monitored by PyTom and his cronies as possible "troll posts" or "controversial topics meant to sow the seeds of discord" and will be promptly and arbitrarily locked without prior notice to you in order to prevent doing any more "damage".

5.   Likes Space-Sims, Straight-Up Dating Sims or anything else as long as it becomes popular enough to make his engine look good: That's right. PyTom doesn't like it if you don't use his engine to make any of these three VN-types. He also doesn't like it if you make articles about things like Christianity or vegetarianism. If you are making an Otome game for fun or making a serious game, but that does not feature anything groundbreaking and is not likely to become popular enough to be worthy of note, you are simply making a "work of staggering genius!" - which is PyTom's codeword for waste of everyone's attention and precious forum space.

After reading this, I hope you have understood the truth about this so-called game engine and its creator. PyTom has been harassing creators since 2004, and will continue harassing them till the day he loses his life to someone he has harassed too far.

  1. There is one other free alternative "game engine" and that's the NOVELTY engine. Too bad it's not so popular.

  2. I gave Novelty a try. It was good. At least, it is something new and original. It is not made over an already existing engine.

  3. The visual novel market is pretty huge in Japan; what you call "pseudo-games" have a large demographic and huge potential as a medium. It's just that over here, no one has managed to bring that out save for Katawa Shoujo, and even that is derided as an average effort compared to the most highly-regarded VNs like Fate/stay night or CLANNAD.

  4. I do understand that this is just your personal opinion, but I was talking about the Visual Novels made with Ren'py. That's all. Nothing can change the fact that it is unoriginal. It is just a copy of an already existing engine with just a few codes slapped on it.

  5. Thanks, Wright, for informing me about this.
It seems that PyTom and his cronies also checks their member's private messages.

So, what is the point of calling them "private"? I can't believe their tyranny. The LSF members really deserve my pity.
It also seems that PyTom's puppets won't cease posting their garbage on my blog. I may have to do something about it.
I wonder how much PyTom paid them to defend his "precious" engine.

  6. Is it actually possible to check a member's private messages. Not saying you're lying. Just wondering if it can be done through the phpbb admin panel without the user's password.

  7. Most admins have the ability to read their user's private messages. But, a good admin always respects a member's privacy, and does not read them.
Too bad PyTom and his puppets were not taught these things at school.

  8. But I've read somewhere that the admins will only read the PMs if a user has been showing questionable behavior and is undergoing evaluation. It's not like they're just gonna randomly read PMs of random users. :|

  9. I like the Ren'Py engine, but everything you said about PyTom is true. It's not obvious right away, but after a few years suffering through his self-serving forum mandates and bigotry, just the icon of Ren'Py makes me shudder since its his forum icon.

  10. Kinougames and a few others got chased out of the forums too, right?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Exactly. Also, a good VN creator named Christine Love was banned from the forum because of some trivial matter. Also, you may learn more about their tyranny from this website.

Like I said before, their Tyranny knows no bounds.

    1. That happened more than a year ago, the community has improved, and that is the ONLY page on their site that even loads.

    2. Dear Kathryn, none of the things you mentioned changes any of the facts.
And I don't know how much PyTom paid you, but I am sure you can earn more money if you spend your time doing something better. Good luck.

    3. Dear Kathryn, instead of whining because I didn't approve some of your comments, try obeying the rules I have written. If you obey the rules, your comment is sure to be approved and published. I don't like vulgar words nor people who use them. So, please, learn to be polite.
Also, the way you keep denying that PyTom didn't pay you only makes me sure that he did.

    4. Kinnou was a bit of a nutcase to be honest. She accused me of being racist because I didn't accept giving a dark skinned character (unnaturally) blonde hair was racially insensitive.

I think what's described there is fairly accurate aside from that. And the community really hasn't improved, if anything it's gotten worse.

    5. I don't care about Kinougames being a scam group or not. Because I don't have evidence, and I don't judge anything without proper evidence. But about PyTom, we have mountains of evidence to prove that he is nothing but an irritating moron.
Many of PyTom's puppets wouldn't agree with you about the community getting worse. They will always keep ranting about how much it has "improved" and how "friendly" and "helpful" it is.
      Check this post: http://www.truthaboutrenpy.blogspot.in/2012_05_27_archive.html
It will tell you how much the community has "improved".
